really hustle'n to get my videography site finished as soooooon as possible. i have 2 more shoots that i want to incorporate into the finished product...so its isnt quite ready. im designing it myself and im siked to learn something new along the way.
the purpose of the site is to be a virtual portfolio but also to explain my creative vision. since video is still a fairly new tool in marketing, i hope by discussing my process on the site....potential clients will understand where i can take them with video.

MELODIC MONDAY...
as alot of DOOM fans have heard...you cant be sure you are actually seeing him perform live. rumor has it that he sends look-a-likes to do his onstage bidding. DOOM claims its all apart of his mater-minded creation....but i think its just a simple case of social anxiety disorder. i've been to a handful of DOOM shows but can faithful say i have seen him perform once. it was a monday night at fluid in 2000 and he was performing his first album OPERATION: DOOMSDAY and some dude in the audience said 'your brother aint shit'....then DOOM threw down his mic and chased him out into the street...show was over. $10 and only 5songs into the set....oh well, at least i know it was the real deal.
(the song, to tell his story about it, entitled 'monday night at fluid' came years later)
and thats why im thinking its really unlikely that he'll be showing up to events like this or this.
here's the man without the mask...

aint it the truth...
i hold comedy in the highest regard....even the low-brow shit because unlike drama(that solicits emotion), comedy requires the intellect to enjoy it.
but even the funniest people can stop joking....
one of my favorite comedians made some really good points about the nation's reaction to the "coco-catastrophe of 2010".
When did Conan O’Brien become Norma Rae? For those of you who don’t remember this 1978 film, Norma Rae stars Sally Field as a beleaguered factory worker who risks her job and everything she’s worked for in order to correct injustices in the workplace. She is everywoman, standing up to The Man to do what’s right. Not just for her, but for the millions just like her all over the country. Those oppressed masses just trying to put food on the table, the ones without health care, the ones struggling to make ends meet. The ones who just want a fair shake. Somebody had to have the courage to take on the Big Baddies running the show. In 1978, that somebody was Norma Rae. In 2010, it’s Conan O’Brien?
How did a Harvard-educated, multi-millionaire late night talk show host magically transmogrify into a guy who got laid off at the local car plant? The overreaction to Conan’s departure has been kind of astounding; as a nation, are we really that concerned about who hosts “The Tonight Show,” a television program that stopped being culturally relevant around 1986?
And let’s not forget, it’s not as if Conan was cancelled. He quit. He walked away from “The Tonight Show” because he rightly or wrongly felt that moving the show half an hour later would destroy the show’s integrity. Okay, fine. But let’s not act as if he’s leading a sit-in at a segregated lunch counter. It’s not that big a deal.
Yes Americans believe in fair play. Fair play means making a deal and sticking to it. Conan got “The Tonight Show,” and therefore he should keep it. I agree with that. But Americans also believe in capitalism, and when fair play bumps up against capitalism, capitalism usually wins. It did this time.
To my mind, there are two reasons why Leno has come across looking as bad as he has throughout the last few weeks. The first is that he seems like an opportunistic pig for agreeing to move back to 11:30. He should have packed up his funny headlines and gone home. The other reason is that Conan has been much funnier about the whole thing. His letter to the Times was funny, his monologue jokes have been funnier, and whereas Leno has come across as needy and desperate, O’Brien’s departure seems, if not exactly classy, then at least in classy’s neighborhood. Of course it’s easy to be classy-ish when you and your staff are walking away with forty million dollars.
I think the deeper reason people are so inflamed by this petty war is that Conan in his own way has come to represent the aggrieved, the injured, the wrongly terminated. I think there is a sense in this country that giant corporations are ruining everything, even late night talk shows. Something so insignificant takes on greater importance because I think on some level, “The Tonight Show” actually has become a very flawed stand-in for all the jobs lost to corporate greed, arrogance, and stupidity. We see Conan as a victim because we feel as though, like us, he wasn’t given a fair shot. If a guy like that, a guy who has everything, can be downsized and demoted, what hope do the rest of us have?
Moreover Leno is installed back in his abdicated throne. It feels like a coup, a particularly unfunny coup. And above him, all the top brass still have their jobs. Just like all the top brass in every other failed or bailed-out corporation. It feels unfair. And it makes people mad.
Sure it’s a shame it didn’t work out for Conan, the most creative talk show host since David Letterman, and I think it’s great he took a principled stand against NBC, but is this really the stuff of rallies? Is this really where we want to spend our political capital? If you have the energy to protest Conan O’Brien’s departure in Burbank, shouldn’t you maybe think about spending some time chanting outside General Motors or Goldman Sachs? Or Congress? This is the cause you want to get involved with? Instead of holding up placards with the Masturbating Bear on them, maybe donate a pint of blood. It’ll be a lot more helpful to somebody.
Conan is an unlikely hero of the working man but at this point, when heroes are far more likely to be squashed than celebrated like Norma Rae, as sad as it sounds, he might actually be the closest thing we’ve got.

now for something totally different...
I teamed up with Nikki Moose to create a video short to promote her blog. She has created a written persona that her readers have come to identify with, which she calls 'soft goth'. For me....I wanted to step out of my own creative comfort zone and try something completely different than what I had been previously doing. I wanted a challenge.
When we sat down for our storyboard session...she summed it all up with a few words: dark, sexy and weird. And I feel like I accomplished just that.....not to mention, Nikki loves the piece.

stills in paradise...
despite the apparent and hopefully temporary hex on my soul....my shoot for paradise movement was a success. here are stills that were taken by some russian dude, whos name has escaped me.
not to toot my own horn or anything....but i secretly love this last one because when you compare this to the video scene...it shows the impact of my composition how the cropped framing can really make the difference in a shot.

gotta go....
today was a major financially set back in my life.....borderline catastrophic. but who can be bothered when your making good art.
i asked this band to put together an acoustic set of their electronic jam entitled 'gotta get outta here'. i even slipped in the original track of the song right at the end so you can get a feel for what we did.
i wanna thank Paradise Movement for coming together to help me pull this off....

underfirst is 1...
jeez...i cant believe its been a year that i have been writing this blog.
as a reminder of its raison d'etre...here is my first post:
Once I heard this preposition/adjective combo, I instantly liked it……it sounded like the answer to an puzzling riddle. But really….it’s much simpler than that. It’s where you will find the reverse gear in this beautiful car, I affectionately called, ‘senor blanco’. Not only was this the first car that made me proud to drive…but also the first ANYTHING that I bought from the profits of my art. I sold the biggest and most elaborate body of work that I had ever created. Letting it go was made much easier when this is what came in return. Underfirst serves as a bookmark to past, present and future inspiration.
GOD i miss that car....

my hero....
this person is high on my list despite the fact she isnt a real person. hahaha. but isnt that what makes for the best kind of heros??? because then they get to be perfect.
here is this gorgeous woman living in the nicest section of brooklyn with her HILARIOUS husband and 5 children, practicing law in a competitive firm but still finding time to make dinner and follow up on all the details of her children's lives. its clear that she loves her family...but she also loves herself. you can see it in the way she dresses.
i wanna to be Clair Huxtable when i grow up....
mature yet playful
stern yet forgiving
sexy yet refined
intelligent yet humble
now who wont want to be apart of this family?!??!

favorite...
in my collection of antique photographs...these are the best!!
1. a mug shot from 1947 for aggravated robbery. and btw, LOVE his fade!!
2. this one looks innocent enough...but then i read the back note and got chills down my spine.
'May 9, 1969 Leaving for Vietnam'
got this photo in an antique shop in Hollywood. i hung out there for awhile, lookin through aton of photos....and to my relief, i found photos of this guy well into middle age. i caught myself sayin out loud, 'oh look, its him....he made it home!!'

music videos CAN be cool...
i just got shown this video and cot dam!!! im impressed
because...
the fact that its a live performance, which i feel is so innovating....yes, i said live(you can hear the changing echos)
also its visually stunning due to a beautiful palette selection and cinematography.
the over all camera work is amazing, the steadycam is the perfect touch.....not to mention the SPOT ON editing in post production.
aaahhh.....
(a sigh of relief for the possible future of music videos)
city and colour
another reason i find this so fascinating is that i have been planning a similar approach to a music video with Paradise Movement this month. having an aspiring piece like this to set my sights on is cool.
